Thermistors
Thermally sensitive resistors, thermistors are components that, upon sensing a shift in temperature, resist the current flowing through them proportional to the temperature change. They are typically used to measure temperature changes. As the temperature around the thermistor changes, the semiconducting materials within them alter the voltage running through the component. This is read by a temperature controller, with the data generated used to inform the function of other components within the circuit.
- NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) Thermistors: Ametherm primarily produces NTC thermistors, which means their resistance decreases as the temperature increases. This characteristic makes them suitable for temperature sensing applications.
- PTC Thermistors: PTC stands for “Positive Temperature Coefficient”. PTC thermistors are resistors with a positive temperature coefficient, which means that the resistance increases with increasing temperature. Ametherm manufactures switching type PTC thermistor. The switching type PTC thermistor has a highly nonlinear resistance-temperature curve. When the switching type PTC thermistor is heated, the resistance starts to decrease at first, until a certain critical temperature is reached. As the temperature is further increased above that critical value, the resistance increases dramatically. This type of PTC thermistors is widely used in PTC heaters, sensors etc. Polymer PTC thermistors, made of a special plastic, are part of this second group and are often used as resettable fuses.
Thermistors are used across many industrial, manufacturing, or electronic application where gas, liquid, or surface temperatures must be measured or responded to, thermistor temperature sensors are extremely common components. They are used in food manufacturing, where temperatures must be controlled to moderate the condition of the food or sanitary environment. In chemical and petrochemical production, non-corrosive thermistors play a great part in producing various fluids, and safely. In aerospace, communications, electronics, and medicine, they benefit both the precise manufacture of equipment and bring temperature-sensing capabilities to the products themselves. And in everyday life, they ensure that ovens, heating systems, air conditioners, and fire alarms can function correctly, and temperatures within vehicle engines can be controlled.
Thermometric Sensors:
- Thermistors – Temperature-sensitive resistors, often used in medical, automotive, and HVAC applications.
- RTDs – Provide highly accurate and stable temperature readings, commonly used in industrial processes.
- Thermocouples – Measure temperature through voltage differences between two metals, ideal for extreme environments.
- Infrared Sensors – Detect thermal radiation without direct contact, widely used in medical and industrial settings.
